Creating mobile games in 2023 Hub Crawl session: an overview

WEB WIRE

One thing Ukie has learned from the pandemic is that virtual events are an important part of our calendar. As an organization representing the whole of the UK, virtual events allow attendees and attendees to participate from multiple hubs and beyond – bringing with them a unique collection of speakers and topics.

Our first virtual hub crawl started with “Making Games for Mobile in 2023”. Gesinimo Games’ Salman Shurie started the process by suspending the development process of his viral hit ‘Tip Tricks’. Salman explained where he went right, and perhaps just as interestingly, where he went wrong and evolved from what he learned. Also, the term “toy” was used because, as Salman described, a toy should be easily accessible and self-evident, so the user interface had to reflect that. Listen to Salman’s talk here.

Next up was Brainspark Games’ Reedah El-Saie, a current member of our Barclays Mobile Growth program. Reedah explores her legal background (and if you saw Dax’s talk in Brighton last week…you might notice a theme popping up!) and how mobile is the ideal platform for educational games. Listen to Reedah’s talk here.

Next up was Trailmix’s Tristan Clark with the story of their game Love & Pies and the importance of storytelling that literally and figuratively burns down the cafe. Tristan explored how Trailmix wanted to create something nutritious in the mobile space while still retaining the bites of playtime that mobile gamers have become accustomed to. Listen to Tristan’s in-depth talk here.

Finally, we had Maria Sayans from two games as our second hub crawl heroine of the series. Maria spoke about the history of ustwo games, the main challenges and opportunities in the mobile space and how they might change in the future. A key realization as she reflected on the rise of cozy games and was excited was that two games have become part of this movement and how “cozy and healthy is the beginning of the journey to meaning.” Approachable story and gameplay that goes beyond entertainment for the player – encourages emotion, thought, connection and maybe future action. Listen to Maria’s fireside chat here.

As always, a big thank you to our overall partner Barclays Games and eSports and to our virtual partner AWS.

Next up is Newcastle – see you there!
