It’s time for more Top 5 Smartphones of 2022 my friends!
The curtains are almost closing on 2022, and this year has certainly been a ride. Since 2020, Wohnen has been riding a roller coaster almost every day! Everything had to be stable this year, if a war didn’t break out in the first few months and gripped the whole world. If the pandemic, which led to a component shortage crisis, wasn’t enough to affect the smartphone segment, the war and continued economic inflation had an impact. We can still say that this year was better than the last two for brands.
Despite the war and the back and forth waves of COVID-19 in China, most brands have found ways to keep their phones at a steady pace. Despite all the problems, we had many important releases for the smartphone segment in 2022. Through this article, I will list the top 5 smartphones of 2022 for myself.
In 2022 we have to say that the competition in the flagship segment has been fierce. Seriously, we had new flagships almost every month in 2022! Also, unlike previous years, the second half of the year was popularized by a variety of phones. Unlike its “Plus” predecessors, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 proved to be an undeniable success, conquering all brands in the market.

The mid-range segment also had many important releases. 5G became even more popular in the low-end categories, and technologies like OIS became more popular in this category. Also, 2022 was an important year for fast charging! We’ve seen many brands break the barriers of fast charging and cross the uncharted 210W charging territory! For 2023 we expect even more impressive progress! According to early reports, it’s going to be an exciting year for lovers of the flagship killer segment!
In this article, I will list the 5 phones that I felt were more relevant. Obviously this is an opinion article and you cannot agree with my choices. Feel free to leave your choices in the comments section below. Without further ado, let’s take a look at Marco’s picks of the top 5 smartphones of 2022.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (Top 5 Smartphones 2022)
Okay, I’m not going to start this list to hold back. The year got off to a good start with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S22 series by Samsung. Obviously the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra was the most exciting phone in the gang.
The Galaxy S22 Ultra features the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, has a 108MP main camera and is the one with a huge 5,000mAh battery. It also brings the largest display in the range, so it’s the perfect choice for those who want productivity but also want to enjoy multimedia and gaming on their smartphone. Did I mention productivity right? Well, this phone was important for a reason too – it brings the Galaxy Note series back to life!
Samsung has decided to end the Galaxy Note series and the usual August Galaxy Unpacked event is now used to unveil new foldable devices. Now the spirit of the “Note Series” lives on in the Ultra. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra brought an S Pen slot with all the features of the old Galaxy Note phones. If you’re a fan of the lineup that created the “phablet” concept, then you’ll agree. The Galaxy S22 Ultra was remarkable.
Motorola Edge 30 Ultra
I’ve written countless articles about this phone, no kidding! The Motorola Edge 30 Ultra has often been in the headlines thanks to its mysterious codename “Fusion”. The device began leaking several months before its release. It promised a lot and fortunately kept most of those promises!
The Motorola Edge 30 Ultra is the world’s first smartphone with a 200 MP camera. It debuted with the Samsung ISOCELL HP1 sensor and introduced a new level of sharpness for mobile photography lovers! This powerful sensor outputs many different image sizes thanks to pixel binning technology.
In addition to the powerful camera, the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra was also one of the first phones to feature the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. It brought a new level of performance as the segment grew weary of the regular SD8 Gen 1 and its throttling issues.
The Moto Edge 30 Ultra also marks Motorola’s entry into the fast charging space – it was the brand’s first phone with 125W charging. The phone has certainly put Motorola’s name back in the headlines when it comes to the flagship range. The Moto Edge 30 Ultra was one of my top 5 smartphones of 2022 and I’m excited to see what the brand will bring in 2023.
Gizchina News of the week
Nothing phone (1)
I have to agree with my buddy Freddy on this choice. The Nothing phone (1) might not be the most powerful or impressive phone of 2022, but it certainly had its place! It was so important to me that it got a spot in the top 5 smartphones of 2022.
The phone brought back some vibes to the old OnePlus! Even the name seems to follow the same principle…. but that’s my theory! These are no coincidences, the brand was created by Carl Pei, one of the founders of OnePlus, in the days of the OnePlus One. There are many conspiracy theories about Pei’s exit from the brand. True or not, OnePlus is now history for him. Now the executive will try to build Nothing’s presence in the smartphone segment.
The Nothing phone follows a few basic principles – it focuses on the user experience, with a simple software version with useful features and long-term support. Nothing also tried to innovate on the back of the Nothing phone (1) with its fancy LEDs for notifications. Some will call this a gimmick, but at least it’s good to see new brands trying different things in a market full of similar-looking devices.
Hardware is more expensive these days than it was in the days of OnePlus. Therefore, Nothing could launch a flagship killer phone. Instead, the brand brought out a premium mid-range phone in the Snapdragon 778G. You also get a 50MP dual camera setup, an OLED screen and fast charging. The icing on the cake is the long-term support. This phone comes with three years of Android updates. We don’t typically see this level of support on phones that cost under $400.
iPhone 14 pro max
While I’m not the gang’s biggest Apple fan, I’m here to honor every achievement the company makes in the marketplace. If there is a smartphone market, we still have to thank Steve Jobs and his innovation in the days of the original iPhone… Putting the nostalgic vibes behind, in 2022 the iPhone 14 Pro Max was one of the most exciting Apple phones of the last time.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max is the leader of the gang and therefore the most expensive. Together with its smaller brother, the device brings a new design language. Apple loves being different and hates following other trends. Instead of using a plain hole, the company opted for a centered, pill-shaped hole. Pill-shaped punch holes were a thing a few years ago, but we’ve never seen a centered hole. To be even different and a little more innovative, the brand introduces Dynamic Island.
The Dynamic Island is one of the smartest uses I’ve seen for the punch hole. There are many custom apps and custom ROMs that try to give the punch holes a function. I’ve seen a few apps create a battery circle around them to help users manage their remaining juice. Well, Apple is upping the ante with Dynamic Island. It shows relevant information, pop-up notifications and more. Everything is in a seamless form and with smooth animations.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max also has one of the best battery life on iPhones. In fact, it wipes out some Android phones. It is definitely the best choice for Apple fans considering the high price you will pay. It deserves a place among the top 5 smartphones of 2022.
Realme GT Neo 3
I end this list with a flagship killer called the Realme GT Neo 3. With this phone, Realme started to leave mid-range territory to reach higher heights with its Realme GT Neo series. The Realme GT Neo 3 series was the first Realme phone to leave that top left hole for a centered hole. Honestly, that’s enough to make it one of my favorite Realme phones! I hate, just hate, hole punch top left. But I’m a symmetry lover, and most users won’t mind that. That too is just my personal opinion.
Further, the Realme GT Neo 3 brought the MediaTek Dimensity 8100 SoC, which was a very capable chipset despite its price. The chipset offers almost the same performance as a Snapdragon 888 or 870. It allowed Realme to launch a cheaper product but with performance that will not bring shame to a flagship party.
A foray into the flagship killer segment
The Realme GT Neo 3 also introduced 150W fast charging, which was another attractive aspect. There are actually two versions – one with 150W and one with 80W. The faster one gets a 4,500mAh battery, the other has 5,000mAh. It’s up to you to choose between more battery backup or faster charging.
If you want great camera performance, this might not be the best phone for you. However, I’m not saying the camera setup isn’t good. It brings a good 50MP camera with OIS and another useful 8MP ultrawide shooter. Of course we have a decorative third sensor for depth measurement. There’s no advanced zoom on this phone, but we won’t find many devices with this feature in the $330 territory. It was one of the best phones in the entry-level flagship segment and deserves a spot in the top 5 smartphones of 2022.
Conclusion – Top 5 Best Smartphones of 2022
In 2022 there were many other good smartphones. We’ve seen the arrival of new flagships and new technologies from other major players. Xiaomi, Oppo and Co. also left their mark in 2022. I have to say, for me at least, 2022 wasn’t the most exciting year for mid-range fans. Anyway, newer phones like the Redmi Note 12 series show that we may see better options in 2023.
