Embracer is ending several Square Enix mobile games

A few months after acquiring three Square Enix studios, Embracer Group announces the removal of several mobile games from app stores.

Embracer Group announced that it is shutting down several Square Enix mobile games developed by its recent acquisition Onoma. Formerly known as Square Enix Montreal, this studio will remove four games from the app stores on December 1, 2022 before finally ending its support.

Last August, Embracer Group completed the acquisition of three major Square Enix studios: Guardians of the Galaxy developer Eidos Montreal, Marvel’s Avengers developer Crystal Dynamics and mobile game developer Square Enix Montreal. In addition to expanding its studio portfolio, Embracer Group acquired the rights to more than 50 IPs, including Grave robbers, deus ex, Thiefand inheritance from Cain. With this acquisition, Embracer Group further increased its prominence in the video game industry as it already owned the company Alone in the dark Publisher THQ Nordic, Evil Dead: The Game Developers Saber Interactive and Goat Simulator Developer Coffee Stain Studios, among others.

Embracer Group is now shutting down several Square Enix mobile games less than a month after a cost-cutting initiative shut down Onoma. While some Onoma staff moved to Eidos Montreal, Embracer Group announced that ongoing projects from the studio would be halted entirely. Four mobile games will no longer be available after January 4, 2023: Arena Battle Champions, DeusExGo, Hitman Sniper: The Shadowsand Space Invaders: Hidden Heroes.

Embracer Group is reducing its available games by removing these four Square Enix mobile titles from the App Store and Google Play Store on December 1st, 2022. Players who already own these games can continue playing for an additional month before the servers Arena Battle Champions, DeusExGo, Hitman Sniper: The Shadowsand Space Invaders: Hidden Heroes switch off permanently. The studio also stated that in-game purchases are already unavailable and no refunds will be given. Those who have already purchased in-game bonuses can enjoy them before the games shut down completely on January 4th, 2023.

The removal of these four mobile games from Square Enix marks Embracer Group’s decision to focus solely on PC and console gaming. The company has various titles in development such as; dead island 2, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remakeand payday 3among other. Embracer Group previously shared his interest in developing a new one inheritance from Cain after Crystal Dynamics sent out a poll to measure interest in restarting the franchise and received over 100,000 responses.
