PlayStation has released its annual top 20 games downloaded from PlayStation Store and Gran Turismo 7 ranks among the highest – at least on PlayStation 5.
The tables published on PlayStation Blog show the top 20 most downloaded PS Store titles, broken down by platform and region – with data for Japan published in a separate article on the Japanese-language version of the site.
Of course, the lists are dominated by cross-platform blockbuster titles Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and FIFA 23but Gran Turismo 7 shows strong performance in all three regions on the PlayStation 5.
in japan, GT7 is the third most downloaded PS5 title of all, behind elden ring and the region exclusively Earth Defense Forces 6. For Europe, the game ranks sixth God of War Ragnarok and somehow Grand Theft Auto V sneak in front of it.
North American players also preferred NBA 2K3, Madden NFL 23and Horizon forbidden west as GT7 ranked ninth in downloads of 2022.
However, compared to other software on PlayStation 4, the game hasn’t proven quite as popular. While it’s still lively in Japan, sitting fifth on the older console, it just narrowly creeps into Europe’s top 20 – beaten by F1 22 and 2019 Need for Speed Heat (which was heavily discounted for much of the year) – although it doesn’t make the North American top 20 at all.
Nonetheless, it’s generally a positive result for Polyphony Digital considering current game buying trends. There’s a roughly 3:1 to 4:1 split in favor of PlayStation 5 for cross-gen titles, and Sony reports that digital sales have outpaced physical sales by 2:1 to 4:1 over the past 18 months.
With nearly 300 million game units sold in 2022 – pending final Q3 results in February – appearing in the top 10 downloads represents a significant number of games in gamer hands.
