New technology of clothing made from enzymes
Why on the news?
On November 16, 2022, the Director of the Department of the Uttar Pradesh Institute of Textile Technology, Dr. G. Nalan Killi that the department’s scientist, Prof. AK Patra, discovered a new technique to make clothes of one’s favorite color and design using enzymes instead of chemistry. It is also used successfully in the laboratory.
Important points
- Prof. Patra said that clothes made with enzyme technology do not harm the human body and the environment. Environmentally friendly enzymes are used as an alternative to various chemicals.
- He said if the cloth is damaged or discarded, this enzyme will mix it into the soil and make it fertile. This enzyme does not harm the water or the human body.
- It is worth mentioning that Kanpur-based scientist Prof. Patra is the head of the Department of Textile Chemistry at the Uttar Pradesh Institute of Textile Technology. He listed more than 800 such chemicals that are used in the textile industry and are harmful to the environment. His research work was published in a prestigious Journal of England.
- For such work, including finding techniques to protect textiles from chemicals, Prof. Patra is honored with the world’s highest textile award. The prize is awarded to him by the English “The Society of Dyer and Colorist”. Prof. Patra will be the first scientist in the country to receive the Chartered Colourist Award.
- Notably, the Chartered Colorist Award is given for textile research and outstanding work in academia.
