A Crash Bandicoot game that just released in 2021 is already shutting down and will soon be unplayable, confirmed an announcement shared this week. That’s what the Crash Bandicoot team said on Monday Crash Bandicoot: On the Run!, The free mobile game released in March 2021 will be retired on February 16, 2023. Purchases have already been suspended in anticipation of the end of service, and as the date approaches, the game will become unplayable at all.
The announcement was shared on the game’s Facebook page with the set dates and details of the shutdown. We’ll also likely see a reminder or two on this page as the date gets closer, but the page is already directing players to the official Crash Bandicoot account for everything else related to the brand.
“Starting December 19, 2022, all in-app purchases will be disabled. For all purchases made, you have until February 16, 2023 to use the associated purple crystals in-game,” the update from the game’s developers reads.
“It meant so much to us bringing your favorite Crash characters to life and we genuinely loved making this game. Thank you for spending your time with us and we hope you will join us for one of our many other games.”
Unfortunately, this is not uncommon for free-to-play games and mobile games in general. While it will come as a disappointment to Crash Bandicoot fans who were still playing the game, it may not come as a surprise to others. Nintendo’s Dragalia lostenjoyed, for example, a longer tenure than Crash Bandicoot: On the Run! did, but it too was discontinued after being playable for a number of years, much to the dismay of those who still enjoyed the original game.
One bright spot for Crash fans is that there is yet another new Crash Bandicoot game on the way. It’s called crash team Rumble, and based on what was announced during this year’s The Game Awards, the game will be released in 2023.
