The “ink tank” is the reason why these printers are much more economical in the long run than conventional inkjet printers. While inkjet printers require you to buy cartridges every time you run out of ink, for an ink tank you can buy bottles of ink, which are much cheaper than cartridges, and refill the tanks yourself. So you end up saving a lot of money that you might have wasted on cartridges. Also, there is no fear of ink drying, which is common with cartridges when not used regularly.
You can also print more with ink tank printers. the HP Smart Tank 580 comes with two bottles of black ink and one each of yellow, cyan, and magenta. You get enough ink in the package to print up to 12,000 black and white pages and up to 6,000 color prints.
The black and white prints come out fairly quickly – around 10-12 pages per minute – but you’ll have to be patient with the colored ones. The option for automatic double-sided printing is also missing, which we hardly missed with a few exceptions. In terms of quality, as long as the documents you print are of decent quality, the printouts are good.
